A country mismatch happens when the VAT number country code (for example, DE) does not match the selected billing country at checkout.
How to fix it
- Ask the customer to confirm the billing country dropdown is correct
- Ask the customer to re-enter the VAT number without spaces, dots, or dashes
- If the business is registered in multiple countries, use the VAT number that matches the billing country
Where to control country mismatch settings
You can control mismatch behavior in the plugin settings:
- Go to EU VAT Checker → General Settings
- Look for the country mismatch setting in General VIES Settings
- Keep it enabled unless your accountant advises otherwise
